Renn Fest 2010

Maryland's Renaissance Festival is one of the oldest and largest around. It is set in Crownsville in a wooded area called Revel Grove and it is decorated to resemble a 16th century village. Some people go for the fantasy and to escape the modern world for a few hours. Plenty of people go just to spend the day having fun outdoors with their friends. There are craft vendors, lots of food stands, a jousting ring, and good musical performances. You will find magicians, fortune tellers, and even a costume rental booth. Many people come in their own costumes. Some are quite elaborate and others are just for fun. Almost everyone seems quite prepared to be stopped and photographed.

Valley Forge

Last week, I spent a day at the Valley Forge National Historic Park in Northeastern Pennsylvania. A fine tour guide led a small group of a few people through the Isaac Potts House where George Washington and his staff spent six months during the winter encampment of 1777-8. Imagining Washington living and working in the house was not difficult. Period furnishings paint a picture of the way the headquarters would have looked and felt to Washington, his wife, Martha, and the other officers on his staff.

Driving through the park was quite pretty. I stopped now and then to capture images of the replica log huts, the cannon, the deer, and the rolling hills. Although there were very few people on the paths early in the morning, more walkers and joggers appeared mid-morning, and I enjoyed seeing horseback riders in the early afternoon. If you would like to see more of the photos I took of Valley Forge that day, please go to my Valley Forge Set on flickr.

Veteran's Day

I visited Washington, DC twice in the last couple of weeks. Although I captured a few good images at the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial and was moved by my visit there, it was clear that this photo taken at the Veterans Memorial Museum and Park near Tampa, Florida last September was my best for Veteran's Day 2009
